AMH will celebrate expansion next week

Alleghany Memorial Hospital will celebrate the completion of its new wing next week.

The week will include a variety of open house events. On Monday tours will be given for AMH's medical staff and employees. The open house and tour for the general public is scheduled for Aug. 13 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. AMH will hold a ribbon cutting/dedication ceremony Aug. 14 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. That event is also open to the public.

The festivities mark the attainment of phase one of the hospital's "New Legacy" construction/renovation project. That phase includes 18,200 square feet of new space for surgery and the emergency department, as well as a new entrance, lobby and parking area.

Kevin Harlan, chief executive officer at AMH, said he anticipates the new wing will be operational within about a week after the celebrations, pending state inspections and approvals. (Harlan noted that unlike other organizations and businesses, open houses and tours of hospital space are best held before the beginning of the use of that space).

The second phase of the project should be complete by January 2004, he added. That will include new outpatient space, expanded and renovated space for radiology, laboratory, rehabilitation and respiratory departments, as well as cosmetic upgrades to patient rooms.

Of the New Legacy project, Harlan said, "It allows us really to enter a new era of health care."
