Four vying for seats on council

Four candidates will vie for three available seats on the Sparta Town Council in the Nov. 4 municipal election.

The final two candidates filed during the last week of the filing period, which closed Aug. 1 at noon. George M. Irwin of Ballpark Road filed July 28, while Lois Sheets of Little River Drive became a candidate July 31, according to information from the Alleghany County Board of Elections.

An incumbent, Irwin has served on the council since 1967, except for a two-year hiatus in the mid-1990s. He is also mayor pro tem, a position typically held by the council member with the most seniority. Sheets, the race's only non-incumbent, is co-owner of The Alleghany Inn and an officer with the Sparta Police Department.

Incumbent council members Agnes Joines and Robert Andrews previously filed to run for re-election.

Voting will be held at the Sparta Town Hall, with the county board of elections overseeing the process. Persons must live within the town limits, be at least 18 years old and be registered to vote to be eligible to vote or to run for town office.

Town council elections are non-partisan.

The office of mayor and the two other council seats will be up for election in 2005.
