Lane closures imminent in construction

Work continues on the current U.S. 21 improvement project. Lane closings and delays for motorists will remain a possibility for the rest of the summer.

Between now and early August, most of the lane closings should be south of Sparta, not in town.

The project consists primarily of paving and is divided into two parts. The part in town starts on Main Street (which is part of U.S. 21) near the Sparta Town Hall and runs southward to the Little River Bridge. It includes sidewalks near the town's shopping centers, curb and gutter, and widening Grandview Drive near the intersection with U.S. 21.

The second part runs from the Little River Bridge southward to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

David Poindexter, resident engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation, said that for the next couple of weeks, work along U.S. 21 in town will mainly be along the road shoulders
