It will likely be early fall before a retainer wall is repaired at thesite of a washout on the shoulder of U.S. 21 in northeastern Wilkes County near the Alleghany County line, said Division Engineer Carl McCann of the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, said McCann, loaded tractor-trailers and other heavy vehiclesare driving on the two remaining lanes of U.S. 21 beside the washoutwith no apparent problems.
McCann said state officials were recommending that heavy commercialvehicles take detour routes instead of U.S. 21 because of the washout. He said it wasn't being enforced as a requirement.
Along those same lines, Alleghany County Manager Don Adams reported to the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners Monday that NCDOT officials agreed to remove the detour signs on Tuesday to allow the free movement of trucks delivering goods into the county and hauling out of the county.
After the washout was reported on the morning of June 17, DOT began
recommending that tractor-trailers and other heavy commercial
vehiclestake detours on Interstate 77, N.C. 18 and N.C. 89.
