Two candidates have filed so far for election to the Sparta Town Council.
According to information provided by the Alleghany County Board of Elections, Agnes Joines filed as a candidate July 10, and Robert Andrews made his candidacy official July 16. Both are incumbent members of the town council.
Three council seats are up for election this year, those currently held by Andrews, Joines and George Mack Irwin, who is also mayor pro tem, a position typically conferred on the council member with the most seniority.
The election will be held Nov. 4, with voting at the Sparta Town Hall. Persons must live within the town limits to be eligible to vote or to run for town office.
First elected in 1995, Joines is nearing the end of her second four-term.
