"It's the best thing happening on Main Street," Alice Keighton said of Books ‘n Friends.
While Keighton is somewhat biased in her cheerful boast — she is manager of the nonprofit bookstore — a business finding it needs to expand to double its space less than five months after opening is a noteworthy achievement.
"We were just getting too many books (for the space the store had)," said Assistant Manager Marilyn Mills. She and Keighton added that Books ‘n Friends still welcomes donations of books.
Alleghany Friends of the Library opened the store March 1 at 35 North Main Street, suite C. It provides a place to receive donations of books as well as to offer them for sale to the public, functions formerly based at the Alleghany County Library. Proceeds from the store go to support the library.
The expansion took place early this month, using space adjacent to the
store along a hallway between Northwestern Capital and the former
Sparta Restaurant. The store is accessible from Main Street through
that hallway or up one flight of stairs from the Evergreen Drive side
behind Main Street.
