Two local Christian camps are currently working in the area to help get projects done for local homeowners.

Carolina Cross Connections is returning again this year to Ashe County and will be serving people in Alleghany County. Meanwhile, Laurel Ridge Camp and Conference Center — often called the Laurel Springs Moravian Camp — has launched a similar ministry here in Alleghany.

The camp has begun a ‘mission camp,' which sends campers out to sites around the county to assist homeowners with light construction work.

Laurel Ridge Camp Director Mike Warren said the ministry placed about 36 campers at work sites around the county for two consecutive weeks in June. The most recent term of the camp was held the week of June 22 through 27, while the first week was June 15 through 20.

The campers are generally sent out in small teams of four to six youths with an adult work team leader to supervise.

Teams have already helped more than 10 local residents with needs at their homes.

The next camp will be held July 27 through Aug. 1.

"We expect 15 to 20 campers participating," Warren said, noting that several jobs have already been lined up for that session as well. The response to the camp's new outreach has been overwhelmingly positive, he said.
