Alleghany has most jobless in west N.C.

Alleghany County led the 25 county region covered under the WNC Economic Index and Report in the percentage of unemployed persons, according to information released last week. Alleghany's unemployment rate for April of this year was 13.17 percent.

Meanwhile, the region's economy recorded positive growth in April, the second straight month of positive performance. Locally, employment figures show the county had a labor force of 4,674 and 647 people unemployed. The labor picture has generally grown more bleak here over the past year.

Even though the figure was high in April, February actually was higher. In that month, Alleghany posted a 13.8 percent jobless rate.

During the same period, Watauga County had the lowest unemployment rate in the region, with 2.78 percent unemployed. Only Swain County, with 14.3 percent jobless, had a higher rate.
