School board ponders wrestling coach post

By the Alleghany County Board of Education's own admission, it held a marathon session this week, with personnel issues dominating both in the public and private portions of the meeting.

The meeting was scheduled for Monday in order to address budgetary concerns just before the beginning of the 2003-04 fiscal year and in lieu of the board's regular monthly meeting for July. With the meeting lasting six and one-half hours, including four in closed session, it was indeed July before it was over.

The board hired 11 teachers, coaches and/or assistants; accepted the resignations of two administrators; approved budget amendments and a budget resolution; approved pupil handbooks and a revised high school attendance policy.

However, the topic which generated the most public interest and participation was one on which the board took no formal action.

A crowd of about 70 filled the board's conference room and spilled into the hallways for a discussion regarding the wrestling coach position at Alleghany High School.

Paul Crouse announced his resignation last winter after 14 years as coach. The position has not yet been filled.
