Area civic groups plan to make the celebration of America's 227th year of Independence a festive one, with fun events tomorrow as well as into the weekend.
Parade
The Sparta Revitalization Committee will sponsor an Independence Day parade on Friday, July 4, beginning at 6 p.m.
Parade participants are requested to arrive to be lined up at 5:15 p.m. at the auditorium entrance to Sparta Elementary School.
Barbara Lucier, one of the parade's organizers, said that about 45 entrants have been registered for the annual event thus far.
"We had somewhere around 50 entries last year," said Lucier. "We expect to have at least that amount this year."
Also returning is the window decorating contest, which will be judged today, July 3, by the SRC. Susan Hollaway and Peggy Brady are judging the contest, which offers recognition to businesses with the best decorations in several categories.
Parade entries will be judged by T.J. Worthington and Henry Thorne and ribbons will be given to the top floats in several categories. As part of the parade, local Veterans of Foreign Wars member and Cub Scouts will make special patriotic presentations in front of the Alleghany County Courthouse. Other parade entries are also scheduled to make brief stops to perform along the parade route.
In addition, refreshments will be offered along the parade route, which
runs from the school to Trojan Village Shopping Center. For more
information, call Lucier at 372-6135.
