Plans for a skate park are discussed

A group of about 10 skating and fitness enthusiasts is looking into that possibility.

They already have a place in mind: at the site of the Alleghany Wellness Center, which is scheduled to open later this year. Dr. Beth Lyon-Smith, a leader of the group and a wellness center board member, said discussions have been held with the board as to use of some of the center property. AWCI (Alleghany Wellness Center Incorporated) owns 16.3 acres of land along Collins Road, only about five or six acres of which will be needed for the center and accompanying parking area.

"There are several kids who enjoy skateboarding," said Lyon-Smith. "There would be a lot more if they had a place. Some skateboard in town on the sidewalks, and that's not the best situation."

The location is beside a housing development on Collins Road and about one-half mile from Highland Village. "I know some kids are out in the street in that area. It would be nice to have a place where kids can play safely."

The group has consulted John Woodruff, chairman of the Alleghany Recreation Commission, as well as AWCI representatives.

The group met June 14 at the AWCI office. "We had 10 energetic people that came," said Lyon-Smith.
