Farmers Market to open Saturday

The Alleghany County Farmers Market will reopen on Saturday morning with a few changes, but a lot of familiar faces.

Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce Director Leanne Murray said the market will open at 8 a.m. and close around noon and will remain open until early October.

The market features homemade and handmade food and crafts. However, no resell items are allowed in the market.

Anyone who chooses to sell prepared foods (cooked, baked or canned) must have a kitchen inspection performed by a representative of the health department.

"The inspection is free and simple," Murray said. "If your kitchen and the regular utensils you use are sanitary, you should have no problem."

This year the market will also have a new feature. A weekly yard sale area is going to open near the entrance of the JobLink Center — towards Jones Street from the Farmers Market area.

"We will be renting parking spaces for people who would like to show up and sell yard sale items," Murray said. Those who wish to offer resale items, new or used, are welcome to participate.

The fee for both the yard sale and the market is $5 per week, she noted. "We hope that by adding the yard sale event, we will be able to attract more people to the Farmers Market and also offer county residents a place to sell their wares," Murray commented.

Those participating in either the market or the yard sale must bring their own tables and chairs and be prepared to pay their fee on Saturday mornings. Tent space and spots for yard sale items are both provided to participants on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on either the yard sale or the market, call the chamber at 372-5473.
