Some of the particulars of this year's Fourth of July Parade began to come together last week, as the Sparta Revitalization Committee discussed plans for the parade at the group's May 12 meeting.
Coordinated by the SRC, the parade on Main Street in downtown Sparta is usually held on a Saturday morning close to Independence Day. SRC President Sandy Rost said that at the suggestion of a group of local leaders, the parade is scheduled in the evening this time, on July 4 (a Friday) at 6 p.m.
Rost said "Let Freedom Ring" has been suggested as this year's parade theme, and SRC members accepted that choice by consensus.
Member Peggy Brady suggested recruiting church hand bell groups to play.
"What if church bells (in the downtown area) rang as the parade got
ready to start?" suggested SRC member Sandy Carter. "That would be a
great way to start the parade."
