Alleghany County School Resource Officer Pete Simmons (photo at right) hands out prizes near the conclusion of the DARE (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) graduation picnic May 9 at the Sparta Lions Club park. About 140 fifth graders attended the event. Simmons leads the program locally.
One facet of DARE is to give children a positive experience interacting with law enforcement officers. At left, several of the
fifth graders help collect trash after lunch, at Simmons' behest. Cleaning up was part of the lessons in responsibility.
