Greene takes first place in state science fair in Raleigh

Whitney Greene, an eighth grader at Piney Creek School, won a first-place award at the N.C. State Science Fair April 25.

Greene's project, "The Effects of Beaver Impoundments When Using Bethnic Macroinvertebrates as Biological Indicators of Stream Health - a One Year Study," took the first prize in the earth science junior division at the state fair. The event was held at Meredith College in Raleigh, where Greene competed with 15 other pupils who had placed first or second in regional competition in that division.

She received a plaque, $75 toward a savings bond and a digital compass.

Kim Elliott, curriculum/instruction director for Alleghany County Schools and the director of the local science fair here last month, said Greene will advance to international science fair competition. The time and place of that event are yet to be determined, she added, but it will probably be held in either San Francisco or Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, following her state-level win, Greene was also nominated to enter the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge. In that contest, 40 finalists will be selected for all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C., where they will compete in October for scholarships of up to $15,000.
