The Alleghany County Board of Education last week approved the school calendar for 2003-04.

"It mirrors this year very much except spring break," said Superintendent Duane Davis.

Assistant Finance Officer Jan Pugh said Easter break and spring break are combined to the week before Easter.

Pugh, who presented the calendar proposal at the board's April 8 meeting, said it was developed by a committee including school administrators and staff members.

This year, with Easter Sunday on April 20, one of the latest dates it can occur, spring break was scheduled for the week of March 17-21. Next year, spring break is scheduled for April 5-9, the week preceding Easter. The day after Easter, Monday, April 12, is also scheduled as a holiday.

Pugh noted that the calendar is subject to change due to weather. This year, the first three days of spring break were used as makeup days for some of the days lost to snow and ice. April 21, known as Easter Monday, originally scheduled as a school holiday, will also be used as a makeup day.

"We can guarantee our kids a good education," commented board member Betsy Dillon. "We just can't guarantee spring break."
