The 2003-2004 Secondary Roads Construction Program for Alleghany County was recently released by Charles Reinhardt, district engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The plan details projects slated for the coming year on secondary roads across the county, including paving projects for unpaved roadways.
A hearing on the plan has been set for April 28 at 6 p.m.
The plan anticipates funding totaling $2,285,702 from several sources, including $1,187,407 from the highway fund; $848,295 from the trust fund; and $250,000 in carry-over funds due to right-of-way refusals. The plan notes that the program is subject to the availability of funding, right-of-way acquisition, and environmental review.
In the event that allocations are greater than anticipated, or roads are not available due to right-of-way refusals, the DOT will continue by funding the next road or roads on the priority list. Paving Unpaved Roads
The plan calls for 83.1 percent, or $1.9 million, to be spent on paving projects for unpaved roadways. A total of 6.4 miles of roadways are on the paving schedule. Included are:
Overall Maintenance
The state has set aside a total of $253,000 for road maintenance and improvement projects. Included are funds for maintaining and stabilizing unpaved roads (11.1 percent) and maintenance funds for paved roads and safety projects (6.3 percent).
Unpaved Roads Maintenance/Improvements
The DOT has set forth 11.1 percent of the available funds for unpaved road maintenance projects.
