Local budget requests totaling about $10.5 million were released by the county this week, the first step towards building a county budget for the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The county departments and other entities funded by the county are instructed to submit proposed budgets, which the county manager then pores over and makes recommendations to the county commission. At that point, the departments which disagree with the manager's recommendations usually get the opportunity to have an audience with the commission and state their case. In the end, the county commission is ultimately responsible to approve or disapprove the county budget and set the tax rate.
The budget requests totaled $10,493,636, not counting the request for the transportation department's administration. Last year, the budget requests totaled $10,857,325, which was down from $10,891,520 in 2001. Two new positions were requested in the budget: a secretary for the building inspection department and a fraud worker for the department of social services. Projected costs for those two positions were not provided. However, the building inspections department also requested the position last year at a projected cost of $18,414.54.
