The Sparta Revitalization Committee plans to join forces with the Alleghany 4-H Teen Club to host an Easter egg hunt for Alleghany County children. SRC President Sandy Rost announced the upcoming event during the committee's March 10 meeting.
The event will be held Saturday, April 19 (the day before Easter Sunday) at Crouse Park in downtown Sparta.
Ellen Wright, volunteer leader of the club, said last week that the time of the hunt and other details are not yet finalized and will be announced later. About 1,000 plastic eggs with prizes will be hidden, Rost said. She said the promotions subcommittee is hoping to get donations from grocery stores to help with candy and other prizes.
Members are also looking for a volunteer Easter Bunny to serve during the event. She described the hunt as a goodwill gesture. "It's not a money-maker as much as to get our name out there," she commented.
Alleghany 4-H members have helped with past Easter egg hunts at the park. "They have the eggs, the manpower and the expertise," said Rost. In addition, the project fits with 4-H's community service function. SRC member John Brady said the committee could promote the event at local schools. Members also suggested having a separate hunt area for smaller children.
Wright said the Easter egg hunt will be open to all children, from age two or three up to about seven or eight, in the county.
