Programs at the Alleghany County Family Resource Center are once again at full pace. Participation is brisk and enthusiastic, and a new program coordinator is enjoying her work.

"I'm just amazed at the participants. I can't believe there's so many coming," said Lisa Absher, who has been coordinator since last December. Melinda Isner, family literacy instructor who teaches at the FRC through Wilkes Community College, said about 20 students attend daily English as a second language (ESL) classes, while another 15 are currently working toward their adult high school diploma or GED (General Equivalency Diploma). The FRC provides free child care and transportation to participants, and 17 children are enrolled in child care at the center.

Meanwhile, seven elementary school age children are enrolled in after-school tutoring.
