Alleghany Board of Education agrees to calendar priorities

Spring officially begins next week, but the possibility of more school closings due to snow or ice still remains.

With that in mind, the Alleghany County Board of Education agreed by consensus last week to a set of calendar priorities which could result in further use of the Saturday school option.

The ice storm two weeks ago resulted in schools being closed Feb. 27, the 13th day missed from the 2002-03 school calendar. (Three of those days have already been made up). School officials elected to make up that day with a day of school on Saturday, March 1.

"Saturday school got us another day of spring break," Superintendent Duane Davis said at the March 5 board meeting.

March 17 and 18 have been scheduled as makeup days for pupils. Spring break was originally scheduled for all next week. March 19 is a potential makeup day as well; it is now scheduled as an optional teacher workday.

The last day of school for pupils, originally slated for May 21, has been moved back to May 30 to make up the remaining seven days.

The calendar priorities include maintaining May 30 as the last day of school for pupils if possible; holding three teacher workdays at the end of the calendar; keeping two days of spring break, March 20 and 21; and holding the Easter Monday holiday (April 21).
