Council approves trash cans

Changes are coming for garbage day in Sparta.

The Sparta Town Council voted 4-1 last week to purchase and implement use of new trash cans for the town.

Discussions of the cans began at last month's meeting. The town's garbage collection contract is up for renewal this year. Chris Walker, the current contractor who is expected to submit a bid for the new contract, made a push for the purchase and use of the plastic cans.

At council's March 4 meeting, Walker said the cans would cost $41 each; each has a 90-gallon capacity and is guaranteed for 10 years. He said the garbage route includes 598 stops. With some customers needing more than one can, the cans would represent an initial investment of about $30,000 by the town. Customers would pay an extra 50 cents per month per can to recoup the cost.

Under the plan, residents would be required to place trash inside the cans at the curb in order for it to be picked up.

Mayor John H. Miller said he had heard positive comments about the plan. Town Attorney William Graham, a former resident of Durham, said that city had a similar system. "It worked very well when residents understood it was their responsibility to roll it to the curb."

The 50 cents per month charge is intended to stretch the cost of the cans over most of the 10-year period for which they are guaranteed.
