Report cards are out, and school principals have sent them to parents during the last few days. But this time, the report cards provide comparative information about the schools themselves.

According to a release from Alleghany County Schools, Gov. Mike Easley declared Feb. 20 North Carolina School Report Card Day. The report cards, including data on each of the state's public schools and school districts, were available beginning that week.

Alleghany's four schools fared rather well overall on the data, including measures of class size, pupil performance on tests, attendance and experience level of teachers.

The report cards were produced in a collaborative effort involving local school district personnel, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the N.C. Education Research Council and the Governor's Office.

The data are based on the 2001-02 school year.
