A late night fire last week caused massive damage to a home on Dewitt Road.
The call came at about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 21, according to Chief Kenneth Miles of the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department, for the fire in a mobile home at 184 Dewitt Road.
Miles said three adults were living in the residence and were present when the fire started; they escaped from the blaze unhurt. The home was the property of Roger Hanes.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is still under investigation, he said. However, the blaze evidently started in a back bedroom, a room being used to store one of the resident's belongings.
"It was quite a bit of flames coming out of that one room," Miles said. "That room was fully engulfed by the time we got there."
Firefighters had the blaze contained within about 20 minutes, he added. "It was basically contained to one bedroom and one bathroom."
However, with severe smoke and heat damage to the rest of the residence, Miles described the home as virtually a total loss. No monetary estimate of damage was available as of presstime Tuesday. Firefighters were on the scene about three and one-half hours.
