Business and community leaders from Alleghany and seven other counties in northwestern North Carolina, along with an economic consultant team from Texas, will next week officially "kick off" their project to develop an economic recovery plan for the region.

The Northwest North Carolina Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) committee will host the event, a meeting at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem set for Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. Patrick Woodie, chairman of CEDS, said of the event, "It's to build enthusiasm and awareness of what we're trying to do."

The CEDS group's 43 members represent Alleghany, Ashe, Davie, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties. Dignitaries from each of those counties are expected to attend the kick-off event, along with a representative from Congressman Richard Burr's office.

Woodie is also an Alleghany County commissioner and the director of New River Community Partners.

He said about 60 people from Alleghany have been specifically invited to the event, which is also open to the public.
