Now at the halfway point, the Alleghany Heart Fund Auction has raised $1,500 more than this time last year and is easily on pace to post a record total overall.
A 36-year tradition held the last two Saturdays in February, the auction produced $7,885 on Feb. 15, according to auction Chairwoman Virginia Setzer. The auction is held at the studios of radio station WCOK and broadcast on the station at 1060 AM.
She said that according to the recollections of herself, Judy Halsey and other longtime auction participants, "We think we had a record first day; we wouldn't swear to that."
That figure is 24 percent more than the $6,378 raised during last year's first Saturday.
With the $7,885 first-day total, the auction is more than halfway to eclipsing the record annual total of $15,217 set last year. Those amounts include winning bids on auction items as well as contributions. Another auction record was set last Saturday, as a gun cabinet from John Wayne Edwards and Carol Edwards sold for a high bid of $1,100. "I think the gun cabinet was the highest item in 36 years," Setzer said.
