Fundraiser with an unusual twist is set Feb. 8 at SES

A spoof of a female beauty pageant, dubbed the "All Male Revue," will be held Feb. 8 at the Sparta Elementary School Auditorium.

The event, the brainchild of Lowes Foods Manager Kenneth Brinegar, will feature a number of well-known local men dressing up for a good cause.

The men in the pageant have agreed to dress as women for a few laughs and to help raise money for their local school systems. "We're going to have Diana Ross, Nancy Sinatra and Tina Turner," said Brinegar with a smile.

Participants in the ‘pageant' will include several well-known figures, including school personnel and other community personalities. A total of 13 men have lined up to take part.

A Cana, Va. man netted three felony charges after he was arrested inside a home on Cleary Road that had just been broken into.

Carl Ray Poore Jr, 33, of Frances Lane, is charged with breaking and entering, possession of a stolen firearm and second degree burglary, all felony charges.

According to a report filed by Det. R.J. Lyall, Poore was caught in the residence of William Sherrill on Cleary Road in Sparta.

Lyall's report said that he and Deputy Steve Carrier were answering a call for a burglar alarm activation on Jan. 25 at 5:25 p.m. on Meadow Fork Road. When they arrived at the residence, owned by Mary Jo Tysinger, they found that the home's meter box had been broken and a rock had been thrown through a back window.

In addition, a security system pad had been damaged inside the home. The Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department was also on the scene, having been contacted because of a fire alarm activation (apparently caused by the damage to the home's security system).

Meanwhile, Lyall and Carrier received a second call to the Sherrill residence, about one mile from the other break in.

While en route to the residence, the deputies noticed an older model Chevrolet truck parked in the driveway of a nearby summer home. The truck was registered to Poore.

Carrier and Lyall proceeded to the residence and discovered a broken window at the rear of the residence. After deputies announced their arrival through the window, ordering the suspect inside to exit the house, Carrier entered the house, followed by Lyall.

Carrier then discovered Poore lying on the floor at the foot of a bed. A VCR and television had been moved in preparation to take them from the residence. In addition, a rifle (.243 Winchester) belonging to Paul Belcher of Floyd County, Va. was found, loaded with a round in the chamber, beneath the bed where Poore was found.
