A federal audit alleging mismanagement of federal funds by the Boone-based Northwestern Regional Housing Authority (NRHA) and recommending that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) take over the authority's projects will now be reviewed for possible action.
The 100-page report has been sent to Michael A. Williams, director of the HUD Office of Public Housing in Greensboro, for review and decisions on what action, if any, to take, said a HUD spokesman in Atlanta.
Ned Fowler, NRHA executive director and founder, said Williams has agreed to meet with him "and work through this while leaving the lawyers at home." Fowler strongly denied allegations of mismanagement of federal funds in the report, which was issued by the HUD Office of the Inspector General after it conducted an audit of authority activities for the period July 1, 1998, to June 30, 2001. NRHA receives HUD funding for its programs, which include Highland Village in Sparta.
