New Year's Baby

While the county's first baby of 2002 arrived rather early — at about 6:30 a.m. New Year's Day — the first birth of 2003 in Alleghany County bested that mark.

Guadalupe Cruz Martinez greeted the world less than an hour into the New Year — she was born at 12:42 a.m. Jan. 1 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital to Maria Lucina Martinez and J. Guadalupe Cruz Acosta, both of Sparta. She weighed six pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 and one-half inches long. Dr. Maureen Murphy was the attending physician.

Maternal grandparents are Teresa Moran Rodriguez and Miguel Martinez Tavera; paternal grandparents are Maclovia Acosta Perez and Santos Guadalupe Cruz Martinez; all of Mexico. AMH and several other local businesses have donated gifts for the 2003 New Year's baby.
