Glade Creek and Piney Creek elementary schools celebrated their School of Excellence awards last week with music and presentations from pupils, school officials and a representative of the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

The state announced the ABCs accountability results for 2001-02 in September. Glade Creek and Piney Creek were two of the state's 299 schools named as schools of excellence, the highest honor in the program. To be named a school of excellence, a school must meet expected or high growth and have at least 90 percent of its pupils score at or above grade level on end-of-grade tests (end-of-course tests in high school).

It was Piney Creek's third consecutive year to win the accolade, while Glade Creek earned the award for a second straight year. Both celebration programs were held Dec. 13 at the respective schools' gymnasiums, with several school officials attending both events.
