Pupils at Glade Creek Elementary School participate in a
candle-lighting ceremony as part of the school's celebration of its
school of excellence award.

Glade Creek and Piney Creek elementary schools celebrated their School of Excellence awards last week with music and presentations from pupils, school officials and a representative of the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
The state announced the ABCs accountability results for 2001-02 in September. Glade Creek and Piney Creek were two of the state's 299 schools named as schools of excellence, the highest honor in the program. To be named a school of excellence, a school must meet expected or high growth and have at least 90 percent of its pupils score at or above grade level on end-of-grade tests (end-of-course tests in high school).
It was Piney Creek's third consecutive year to win the accolade, while
Glade Creek earned the award for a second straight year.
Both celebration programs were held Dec. 13 at the respective schools'
gymnasiums, with several school officials attending both events.
