Sparta town officials became art jurors for a few minutes last week as they selected winners in the town seal contest during the Dec. 3 Town Council meeting.

The town will therefore have an official logo for the first time. Sparta received about 40 entries in the contest, whose deadline was Nov. 27. Mayor John H. Miller and the council members looked those over and agreed on first, second and third place winners.

The first-place design was by Tom Berry of Laurel Springs; second place, James D. Caudill of Glade Valley; and third place, Luella F. Lane of Sparta.

The contest awards were $100, $50 and $25 respectively. While the contest was open to anyone of any age, most of the entries came from local elementary school pupils. The art departments at Glade Creek Elementary School and Piney Creek Elementary School had encouraged pupils to enter; Glade Creek responded with 27 entries, while Piney Creek sent seven.

Council's vote approving the winners and prize awards also included awarding $50 to each of those two schools' art departments.

“You can tell the kids have put a lot of work in it,” said council member John Brady, who headed up the seal design contest effort for the town. He recommended the donations to the school art departments which participated in the contest.

The final form of the town insignia is not yet set.
