Local carver makes Yule ornament for White House

Dan Abernathy, a local carver who lives near Sparta off U.S. 221, recently was honored by having one of his hand-carved birds placed on the White House Christmas tree.

Dan and his wife, Kathryn, left for a trip to Washington, D.C. on Dec. 3 and while there, they were the guests of First Lady Laura Bush on Dec. 4 at the White House. Mr. Abernathy was selected by the North Carolina Arts Council to represent the state by carving the bird ornament, representing a downy woodpecker on a piece of cherry bark.

The work was carved from tupelo wood, painted in acrylics and had a total weight of less than 6.5 ounces.

The couple will be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary on Dec. 4 at a noontime Christmas reception with the first lady.
