Several holiday events set

With the holiday season in full swing, opportunities abound in the area to help people get into the spirit.

Upcoming festive events include:

  • a winter concert featuring the Sparta Elementary School sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands and the Alleghany High School band, tonight, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Sparta School auditorium;
  • "The Singing Christmas Tree," at Sparta First Baptist Church on Main Street at 7 p.m. Dec. 6, 7 and 8. The annual program, a local tradition, includes a community choir, a children's choir and puppets. Admission is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 372-8446;
  • The annual Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair this Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Emerson Black Building at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds. Santa Claus will make an appearance from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The fair is part of Choose & Cut special activities day, held the first Saturday of December. Several local tree farms and other organizations have special attractions scheduled that day. Santa Claus will be especially busy; he is scheduled to be at the Bickerstaff greenery barn near Sparta from 10 a.m. until noon, and at Roberts Tree Farm in Ennice from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.;
  • Independence, Va.'s annual Christmas parade Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. on Main Street;
  • A live nativity scene at Trojan Village Shopping Center Dec. 7 from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., presented by the Alleghany Baptist Association.
