New charges filed against Edwards

Patricia Nicholson Edwards faces 34 new felony charges related to misappropriation of funds, according to warrants served last week.

In warrants for arrest issued Nov. 18 by Magistrate K.D. Graybeal, Edwards, 48, of N.C. 18 south of Sparta in the Whitehead community, was charged with 25 counts of embezzlement by a public official or trustee, four counts each of forgery of endorsement and uttering a forged endorsement, and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. Edwards had netted charges last month for 19 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Those charges were reported in previous editions of The Alleghany News.

According to the warrants, the alleged embezzlements took place over an eight-year period, from Oct. 1994 until early last month, while Edwards was a teacher at Sparta Elementary School and secretary/treasurer of the Sparta School Gift Fund. She allegedly corruptly used and misapplied money belonging to that fund, with which she was entrusted.

The forgery and uttering charges also relate to that fund. Edwards is charged with forging the signature/endorsement of Michelle Todd on four checks last year.
