Artistically-inclined people who want to help design a seal for the Town of Sparta, but who have not yet done so, have less than a week to find their inspiration.
The deadline for entries in the town's logo design contest is Nov. 27 — the day before Thanksgiving — at 3 p.m. Entries should be turned in to the new town office at 304 South Main Street.
It was the town's move to its new headquarters — the former site of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation — which prompted discussions among town officials about the need for a town insignia.
Town Council member John Brady, who announced the opening of the contest early last month, said the design should reflect Sparta's history. Brady has said the contest rules also stipulate that the design be original and within a 12-inch diameter circular format, capable of being enlarged or reduced. It should consist of no more than five different colors, excluding the black outline, and should include the name "Sparta." First prize is $100.
The contest has been promoted at public schools in Alleghany County. Town Manager Tom Douglas said Tuesday that the town has received 27 entries from Glade Creek Elementary School and seven from Piney Creek Elementary School. Entries from Sparta Elementary School and Alleghany High School are still to come.
The contest is open to anyone of any age.
The entrant's name and telephone number should be on the back of the entry. Of the entries received so far, Douglas said, "There's several of them that look good. These kids are artistic, they really are."
The telephone number for the town office is 372-4257.
