The Sparta Revitalization Committee on Monday voted to begin forming a long-range plan for improvements downtown and to involve a variety of local officials in that process.
SRC President Sandy Rost said the need for a vision statement and a five- or 10-year plan came out of discussions with officials regarding money allocated to the committee from the Town of Sparta. The town began allocating the SRC $6,000 per year for appearance improvements. About a year ago, the committee distributed the $6,000 through grants to Main Street businesses for storefront improvements.
In considering how to spend the yearly allotment, Rost said, "We need to be thinking long-range." Purchasing lighting for the town would be one possibility, perhaps including replacing the present utility poles.
"You want to have a vision, an overall plan," said SRC member John Brady, who is also a Sparta Town Council member.
