Official enrollment for the Alleghany school system has increased by 3.5 percent over last year.
According to figures provided by Alleghany County Schools, as of Oct. 2, 1,459 pupils were enrolled, compared to 1,410 at the same point last year. The Oct. 2 date represents two months, or 40 days of school, into the 2002-03 school year. The state uses figures at that point to determine allotments to school systems, as well as compliance with class size restrictions. Oddly, the county's largest school, Sparta Elementary School, showed no increase, with 610 pupils, the same number as last year.
Glade Creek Elementary School reported the largest percentage increase of the school system, with 258 pupils, 16 more than a year ago, a gain of 6.6 percent. Enrollment at Piney Creek Elementary School rose 5.8 percent, from 172 to 182.
