Voters will have a number of choices on the ballot this Tuesday, including a number of local races. On election day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, polls open at 6:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m.

On the ballot this year are races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, 45th District N.C. Senate, 90th District N.C. House, Alleghany County Sheriff, three seats on the county commission and three seats on the local school board and a number of state judgeships and other uncontested races.

Polling places, listed with addresses by precinct, include the Emerson Black Building at 1375 U.S. 21 North for Gap Civil; the Whitehead Community Center at 5371 Spicer Mountain Road for Whitehead; the Cherry Lane Community Building at 8743 U.S. 21 South for Cherry Lane; the Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department on N.C. 18 South for Cranberry; the Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department for Piney Creek; the New Hope Community Center for Prathers Creek; and the Glade Creek Community Building at 2532 Barrett Road in Ennice for Glade Creek.

One-stop absentee voting will end on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. Voters who choose that option may be from any precinct, but must already have registered to vote prior to the deadline. One-stop voting is available at the board of elections office, located at the intersection of Whitehead (N.C. 18 south) and Jones streets in Sparta.

Meanwhile, paper absentee ballots are due in the board of elections office by Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. (They must be received by that date in the office, irregardless of postmark). For more information on voting, call the board of elections office at 372-4557.

Election Responses

The Alleghany News mailed out election questionnaires earlier this month to all of the candidates involved in selected local races. Included are all of the Alleghany County races, with the exception of the uncontested soil and water contest, as well as the 45th N.C. Senate race and the 90th N.C. House race.

Each candidate's response is listed in the order he or she appears on the official ballot for this year's election. Information on the unofficial election winners and unofficial vote totals will be provided next week, provided results are available. Candidate responses begin on Page 5A of this week's edition and continue on pages 7A and 8A. A copy of the sample ballot for the election was printed in last week's edition, but sample ballots are still available at the elections office.

Constitutional Amendment

According to information provided by the Alleghany County Board of Elections, an amendment to the state constitution that is included on this year's ballot is more accurately described as a technical correction. It deals with how the legislature transfers property to the state Nature and Historic Preserve.

If approved by voters, lawmakers would need just one legislative step to accept land into the preserve. Under current law, the Legislature has to pass both a joint resolution and then a separate bill to make the resolution legally binding.

The change would permit land to be accepted by only the passage of a bill. The preserve was established through a provision of the state constitution to preserve park, recreational and scenic areas, as well as other natural and historic resources.
