A former Sparta Police Department officer was charged in a shooting incident at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, according to a warrant filed by Deputy Bryan Maines.
Franklin Garnett Hash, 39, of Murphy Street in Sparta, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, a felony, after allegedly shooting at his brother-in-law, Ricky Lynn Hamm.
"The shot missed him by about six inches," said Maines. "Hash was standing on the floor of the shop and Hamm was standing up in the back of Hash's tool truck when Hash fired in his direction." No physical injuries to either man were reported in the incident.
"We were just glad that no one got hurt," said Maines. "Things could have turned out a lot differently."
The two men apparently had a disagreement over personal issues, Maines said. Maines said that deputies had been called to the scene prior to the shot being fired to investigate a disturbance there. The incident occurred in a shop building on the property of Ricky Hamm on Brown Road.
