Sparta woman nets charges in alleged fundraising scam

A Sparta woman was arrested Monday on 13 charges of obtaining property by false pretenses after allegedly utilizing a fundraising scam to raise money for her own personal use.

Commissioners approve new half-cent sales tax, effective Dec. 1

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners Monday approved instituting a new one-half cent sales tax, effective on Dec. 1 of this year.
