Comedy and variety show set Saturday

One of Alleghany County's most popular annual entertainment events will once again amuse its audience, while helping philanthropic causes, this Saturday. The 10th annual Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show is set for Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Sparta Elementary School auditorium.

Agnes Joines, director of the show, said this year's show will especially emphasize the "hillbilly" theme.

Joines is also chairman of the Alleghany Planning Committee, which sponsors the event. The committee is a supportive arm of Blue Ridge Opportunities Commission (BROC).

The show is a fundraiser to help provide scholarships for two local students, as well as to assist low-income families in Alleghany.

Joines said last year's show netted about $3,000.

Sonia and Bill Joines will return as emcees of the show, and Dick Moore will offer an invocation. The program's offerings will range from serious to slapstick. Highlights are include the American Heritage Dancers and Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM).
