Vote actually to take place on Oct. 21

The county's vote on the proposal to increase a local option sales tax by one-half cent will be at their regularly-scheduled mid-month meeting, but that meeting will take place on Oct. 21.

A story in last week's edition incorrectly placed the date of that meeting on Oct. 16, which is a Wednesday. The commissioners typically meet on Mondays.

As for the Oct. 21 meeting (this coming Monday), it will be at 3:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Alleghany County Office Building in Sparta. State statutes require that the county give at least a 48-hour notice prior to voting on the tax, but a public hearing is not required.

However, a public hearing on the tax was held in July by the commissioners. After that hearing, the tax was approved to begin on July 1, 2003. The new effective date for the tax would be on Dec. 1, 2002.

If the new tax is approved, it would increase the local sales tax rate to seven cents on the dollar.
