Twin Oaks man is charged with murder after body found in home

The Alleghany County Sheriff's Department charged a Twin Oaks man with first-degree murder after a shooting took place in his home early last Friday morning.

Vote actually to take place on Oct. 21

The county's vote on the proposal to increase a local option sales tax by one-half cent will be at their regularly-scheduled mid-month meeting, but that meeting will take place on Oct. 21.

Alleghany, two other counties net $250,000

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $250,000 grant to Alleghany County Schools and school systems in two other counties to improve literacy skills and academic achievement.
