The Alleghany County Family Resource Center (FRC) will re-open next week, resuming its two largest programs.
"We're going to re-open Oct. 7 with partial programming," said Ellen Wright, executive director of the Alleghany Partnership for Children, the lead agency for FRC. She said the decision was made at the Partnership's executive committee meeting Sept. 25.
Programs to be picked up Monday include family literacy, ESL (English as a second language) and MotheRead. Family literacy and ESL have been the biggest programs at the center in participation, Wright said.
he FRC has been closed since July 1 due to continuing uncertainty with the state budget. The center's $75,000 annual budget comes entirely from state funds, and the legislature had considered some proposals to eliminate the funding.
Although the 2002-03 state budget has not been finalized, the picture is clearer now, with the N.C. House of Representatives passing a tentative budget last month. "We've been told we're going to be funded," said Wright. The funding may come from state or federal sources or a combination thereof. "We're pretty sure we're going to get funding, but we're not sure when."
