The state's infant mortality rate dropped to a new all-time low last year, according to figures released by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The overall rate declined from 8.6 (infant deaths per 1,000 live births) in 2000 to 8.5 in 2001. Last year there were 1,005 infant deaths in the state and 118,112 live births. In 2000, there were 1,034 infant deaths, compared to 120,247 births.
In Alleghany there was one infant death last year and 104 live births, for an infant mortality rate of 9.6. In 2000 the county had one death and 126 births, for a rate of 7.9.
