The ABCs school performance results, released last week by the N.C. State Department of Public Instruction (DPI), held good news for all four Alleghany County public schools.

For 2001-02, Glade Creek and Piney Creek elementary schools were again named schools of excellence, the highest accolade in the ABCs program.

All four schools met expected growth, with Piney Creek and Sparta Elementary School also meeting the high growth standard. Sparta School was named a school of distinction for the second straight year.

Alleghany High School's performance composite — that is, the percentage of pupils scoring at grade level or better — was more than 10 points higher than last year, improving AHS to a school of progress.
