Derby — Several cars are smashed together during one of the heats in
Saturday night's demolition derby. About 2,300 attended the event.

A crowd of about 2,300 was in attendance for what was supposed to be the finale of the Alleghany County Agricultural Fair last Saturday night at the Justice Carlisle Higgins Fairgrounds: the demolition derby.
"We were pleased — it was down a little bit from some years — but we were pleased with the turnout," commented Bob Edwards, interim chairman of the fair committee. "We had a lot of favorable comments. We're just looking for another good crowd for the lawnmower race."
The demolition derby, along with the lawnmower race, provides funds for
the rest of the fair, Edwards said. Proceeds from both events go to pay
for things such as the cement barriers that were bought this year to
help make the derby safer, insurance and premiums for the livestock,
crafts and other exhibits at the fair. The lawnmower race, originally
slated for Sept. 7, was postponed because of rain and was rescheduled
for this Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.
