Alleghany High assistant glad to be ‘back home'

Serendipity has played a significant role in the life of Alleghany High School's new assistant principal.

Tony Hall originally planned to go to law school before money from the GI Bill helped him get his teaching certification.

Hall came to the AHS post somewhat inadvertently, having served as an elementary school assistant principal in Wilmington for the last four years. He had said he would never be a high school administrator and was not really seeking such a position when he found out about the opening.

Nevertheless, Hall, who is originally from Galax, Va., described the job as a good fit for himself and his family, especially because it brought him back to this area. "I'm happy to be back in the mountains. I'm happy to be back home," he said.

His first day as assistant principal here was Aug. 5, the day before classes began.

Hall is succeeding Barbara Lyon in that position, following the Alleghany County Board of Education naming her as the new AHS principal.
