Two county agencies are teaming up to help 'get out the vote' during the weeks preceding the upcoming Sept. 10 primary.
The Alleghany County Board of Elections and Alleghany in Motion (AIM) are planning to provide services to voters during the one stop voting period. AIM vans will take any voter in the county to vote for $1. The return trip home will also cost $1.
Transportation would normally cost most riders about $2 per stop.
Those who want to use the service will be required to schedule their trip at least 24 hours in advance by calling the local transportation authority at 372-TRIP (8747).
As an added effort, voter registration forms are being distributed by the county's AIM drivers in an effort to bolster the number of people who can participate.
One-stop voting is a form of absentee voting that is 'no excuse,' which means that any voter from any district who wishes to participate may do so for any reason. Another form of absentee voting is the paper ballot, which is mailed out. Those ballots are subject to some restrictions.
For instance, a voter would need to state he or she is going to be out of the county when the election is held or that he or she is physically unable to get out and vote.
However, one-stop voting does not have such restrictions.
