A Mount Pleasant man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle accident on state road 1157 (County Line Road) Saturday night at 10:30 p.m., according to a report filed by Trooper S.R. Grizzell.
Killed was 36-year-old Timothy Wayne Stewart of Mount Olive Road, Mount Pleasant. Stewart was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
According to Grizzell's report, Stewart was traveling north on County Line Road at an unsafe speed. The vehicle was traveling left of center when the driver braked, causing the vehicle to skid off the right side of the road. The estimated speed of the vehicle was 55 miles per hour, the report said, consistent with the speed limit on the road. However, that speed was apparently deemed unsafe for the area of the accident, specifically a curve, by the trooper. The estimated speed at impact was 30 miles per hour, the report shows.
Once the vehicle skidded off the right side of the road, it traveled down an embankment and turned partially on its right side. The hood, windshield and roof of the right side collided with a tree. The vehicle then leveled out and the left side collided with a second tree further down the embankment. Finally, the vehicle continued down the embankment until it came to rest against a third tree.
No charges were listed on the report.
The vehicle driven by Stewart, a 1988 Pontiac 6000 LE, was registered to Billie C. Rogers. Rogers listed the same address as the one listed by Stewart. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $800. Stewart was transported to Alleghany Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Medical Examiner Dr. Jim Holleman.
Holleman said Stewart died on impact from massive head injuries. Funeral arrangements were not available by presstime.
